Milwaukee Black Friday Shopping Strategies
Black Friday is almost here. In my social circles, it seems that Black Friday discussions are just as common as Thanksgiving discussions this year. Bargain shopping on Black Friday has become as much of a tradition as turkey and football on Thanksgiving. Is it worth dealing with the aggravation of shopping on Black Friday to save a few (or more) bucks? For some people, yes, for others, no.
If you plan to participate in this event, we have some suggestions to help maximize your efficiency and maintain your sanity.
Plan Ahead
By the time the Thanksgiving newspaper is available, you should already have your list of items you are going to try to get, and know which stores you’re going to visit. Check out our page Black Friday in Milwaukee for ad scans and hours of many stores around the Milwaukee area.
Many people wait until the Thanksgiving paper comes out to start their Black Friday planning. This can be a big mistake. Although I recommend making your list in advance, I still suggest getting the Thanksgiving newspaper. The paper is good to have on hand to review the ads, have something to take with you on Black Friday, and for bonus coupons that might only be in the paper.
Go on a Recon Mission
The best way to plan ahead is to visit the stores you’ll be targeting on Black Friday in advance. Ideally you will want to visit on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or even on Thanksgiving if the store you’re targeting is open. By going early you can see where the items you’re targeting will be located. Don’t think that because you know where the electronics department is, that that is where your TV will be. Often times retailers will place doorbuster items in other areas of the store. If everyone else is running to electronics when the door opens, and you know that the item is located in the clothing department, you’ll be in good shape.
Get in, Get out
The only thing worse than waiting in line to get in a store on Black Friday is waiting in line to get out of the store. Your best strategy is to grab the items you’re targeting and check out immediately. Sure, you’ll be at Walmart and Target and might need to pick up some stuff for around the house. Today isn’t the day to do it. Get your items, and get out.
Work in Teams
If you have friends or family members who like to partake in the Black Friday madness, team up with them. When two or more people are working together, you can become more efficient shoppers. Combine your lists and meet in the checkout line. While one person waits to check out, the other can continue to shop around the store. Or, your shopping partner can go to the next store and start finding items there.
Comparison Shop Online
Online retailers like Amazon.com have gotten in on the Black Friday action by offering deals that rival brick and mortar stores. Before dealing with the aggravation of shopping on Black Friday, check prices for the same items Amazon. You may be able to do all of your Black Friday shopping from the convenience and comfort of your home. Some retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy have been known to offer some of their doorbuster items online as well as in store.

Deal or No Deal: Southridge Mall Black Friday VIP Package
If you subscribe to the LivingSocial email list, you may have seen the offer for a VIP package at Southridge on Black Friday. For $10 (regular price - $20), you are guaranteed a close parking spot at Southridge on Black Friday. VIPs also receive access to a VIP lounge. This offer is valid through midnight tonight.
Is paying for these perks worth it?
VIP Parking
VIPs will receive all day in and out access to a reserved parking area near the southeast entrance to the mall. At first glance, the thought of having to pay to park at Southridge seems ridiculous. On the other hand, finding a parking spot at a major mall like Southridge on Black Friday can be highly aggravating. If easy in and out access to the VIP parking area eliminates this stress, perhaps it might be worth it.
VIP Lounge
Also included in the VIP Package is access to the VIP lounge. The VIP lounge will offer shoppers repose from the Black Friday insanity by offering refreshments and a place to relax throughout the day. The purchase of the VIP package allows for two people to enter the VIP lounge throughout the day.
Deal or No Deal?
My verdict: No Deal. I prefer to save my $10 to spend in the stores.
If being a VIP got me early access to stores, or a pass to the front of the line, then I would certainly be interested. Although a VIP parking space sounds appealing, I usually get to the stores early enough to find a decent place to park.
For me, Black Friday is all about getting in and out of the stores I am targeting as quickly as possible. Once I am done at a store, I am on to the next store. There is no time to relax and enjoy refreshments. Therefore, the VIP lounge doesn’t offer me much value on Black Friday.
What do you think? Would you pay $10 for this VIP shopping experience? Please leave a comment and let us know!
