Three Tips for Gifting a Perfect Bottle of Wine
With Christmas less than a week away, we invited Joel Freeborn, owner of Wine Cellar of Wisconsin, to share some suggestions on how to buy the perfect bottle of wine for a gift.
Well, here we are, just a few shopping days to go, and you still haven’t found the right gift for the wine lover on your list. Have no fear: Just follow these three simple tips, and you’ll have a bottle they will talk about for years to come!
1. Learn their preferences. The wine universe is full of widely varied flavors. Knowing that your gift recipient loves wine is certainly helpful, but it’s not always enough; for example, even the most passionate ‘Big Red’ fanatic may not care for Chardonnay. If you can uncover their very basic preferences of red vs. white, or sweet vs. dry, that alone will go a long way towards picking a bottle they will love. If at all possible, try to gather more specific information like preferred grapes or regions, as it will lead you even closer to the bulls-eye.
2. Know your budget. Quality wine is available at every price point from $7 to the moon, and almost all of it is priced appropriately (in other words, $15 bottles are better than $8 bottles, $40 bottles are better than $20 bottles, and so on). Knowing in advance whether you are looking for a $15 bottle or a $50 bottle will significantly narrow your search and save time (you could use a little extra time during the holidays, right?).
3. Be adventurous. Armed with your recipient’s preferences and a budget, now you’re ready for the fun part! Head out to your favorite wine shop and see what jumps off of the shelf. Don’t be afraid to grab a bottle you’ve never seen before, and by all means, ask the staff for their own personal suggestions. You’ll walk out with a bottle that the wine lover on your list will be thrilled to pop.
Happy shopping, and have a wonderful holiday season!

Affordable Thanksgiving Wine Pairings
With Thanksgiving only one week away, we invited Joel Freeborn, owner of Wine Cellar of Wisconsin, to share some suggestions on wines that would pair nicely with a Thanksgiving meal, yet not break the budget.
Pairing a wine with the traditional turkey dinner can be one of the trickiest wine pairings of the year. Because turkey, as well as traditional side dishes like stuffing and cranberries, have subtle and varied flavors, many ‘big’ reds like Cabernet and Syrah can overpower the meal, making everything else seem a bit bland. Moreover, the Thanksgiving dinner table is almost certain to include diners with a wide range of palates, making it extremely tough to select a bottle that pleases everyone. To tackle this annual pairing challenge, we recommend taking one of a few approaches:
Celebrate a global tradition: Every year, on the third Thursday of November, the producers of France’s Beaujolais region celebrate the global release of the World’s youngest wine, Beaujolais-Nouveau. Made entirely from grapes of this year’s crop, 2011 Nouveau was on the vine just weeks ago, and hit store shelves today. Light and fruity, Nouveau typically shows very well with the traditional turkey dinner. Just make sure to drink up. Fun and tasty on release, Nouveau does NOT age well, and is best consumed within its first 3-6 months. The most famous bottling – and often the best value – is the Georges Duboeuf 2011 Beaujolais Nouveau ($7.99 at the Wine Cellar, prices vary elsewhere).
Enjoy a crisp White: Many experts agree that traditional German Riesling makes the ‘classic’ white wine pairing for Thanksgiving. Crisp, clean and refreshing, Riesling makes a great mouth-cleanser between bites. German Riesling can vary from bone-dry all the way up to a fully sweet wine. While there is no iron-clad rule regarding sweetness, we find that bottles with just a touch of sweetness, like August Kesseler’s ‘R’ Riesling Kabinett 2009 ($12.99) tend to be the biggest crowd-pleasers. If your palate leans more toward the dry Whites, Cline’s Cool Climate Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2010 ($9.99) is definitely worth pursuing.
On an American holiday, sip America’s wine: Although global debate rages over which regions can produce the best Chardonnay, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, etc., there is no question that California produces the finest Zinfandel in the world. And as luck would have it, traditionally-styled Zin has just the right combination of fruit and spice to complement turkey beautifully. America’s top-selling Zin, Seven Deadly Zins 2008 ($10.49), will pair nicely; we also recommend ‘Zynthesis’ Old Vine Zinfandel 2010 ($9.99).
Drink the classic Red pairing: Pinot Noir is another popular ‘classic’ pairing for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Fruit-forward Pinot carries much more flavor and complexity than Beaujolais-Nouveau, without overpowering the flavors of the food. Oregon’s Jigsaw Pinot Noir 2008 ($14.99) is a huge crowd-pleaser, and a very safe bet. Another great option is Lurton ‘Domaine Les Salices’ Pinot Noir 2009 ($9.99). Enjoy!
