Advice on Selling Gold and Jewelry From Robert Haack Diamonds
Over the past several months, we’ve seen an uptick in visitors to our site searching for information on selling gold in Milwaukee. One of our recent visitors to our previous posts on selling scrap gold in Milwaukee was Bret Eulberg, the owner of Robert Haack Diamonds located on the corner of 76th Street and Layton Avenue in Greenfield. Bret left a comment for our readers with some advice on gold sales in Milwaukee and his store information (note to business owners – we encourage this type of interaction with readers on our website!). We asked Bret a few questions that we thought might be helpful to area consumers interested in selling gold, diamonds, or jewelry in Milwaukee. Here’s the exchange: Read more
Interested In Selling Gold In Milwaukee? Tips From Aqua Owl Gold
Recently we wrote about the hot trend to sell unwanted gold and how several local jewelers were advertising to buy gold and diamonds in the Milwaukee area. Carole Ross from Aqua Owl Gold read our post and left a comment inviting readers to check out their business. And so we did!
Aqua Owl Gold is a business owned by Carole and her husband, Ed, that works with hosts in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois to conduct parties where guests sell their unwanted gold. We followed up with Carole and asked her if she’d mind sharing some of her expertise with our readers in the Milwaukee area who may be interested in selling their gold. Here are some great nuggets we picked up from Carole:
- Look for items around your house that aren’t useful to you – for example, gold chains that are kinked, class rings, out of style jewelry, lost pairs of earrings, old gold watches, and even gold teeth!
- If you have any doubt if something you own contains gold, it doesn’t hurt to have someone take a look at it. Carole said that they can quickly tell if something is gold or not. One of the tests they use is to put the gold piece up to a magnet. If it sticks, then it’s not gold (gold is not magnetic).
- Don’t just go to one place to sell your gold in Milwaukee. If you have the time to see what others are buying for, take the time to check around. If you are invited to a party and you’re doubting the fairness of the price, take it to someone else if you’re not comfortable. Carole said that she and her husband regularly shop gold around Milwaukee in order to try to pay top dollar.
- If you are considering selling gold jewelry that has sentimental value to you, take some time to think about the transaction.
- Recycling unwanted gold is a “green” business. (There are several environmental concerns with mining gold, including the use of cyanide to dissolve and extract gold.)
Carole had a great story about one party they were at. The host threw a couples party and a neighbor showed up for the party without any gold. After getting a better idea of what the party was all about, he left the party to get some unwanted gold at his house. When he showed up with gold watches and his gold chains he used to wear back in the 80′s, everyone started to join in the fun! The guests were having fun guessing how much money he’d get for his gold. Turns out he walked away with $660!

- The host monitors the RSVP’s to plan accordingly for food and drink.

Cash For Gold at Milwaukee Area Jewelers
Thanks to the high price of gold and consumers looking to raise cash, sales of gold to jewelers is a hot trend. With gold selling close to $900 an ounce right now, it may be wise to consider selling your unwanted gold pieces. Just the other day Richard Kessler of Kessler Diamonds was on a commercial on 94.5 Lake FM advertising his services to purchase gold jewelery. Robert Haack Diamonds has a billboard just west of the Marquette Interchange that advertises they’ll buy gold and diamonds. Mr. Kessler or Mr. Haack would probably love to see someone like Mr. T (pictured here) walk in their store to sell all of his gold chains!
While there are a lot of online businesses that you can sell your jewelery to, it is probably best to deal with a local business. The Consumerist ran a great piece last fall about a customer receiving a really low bid on their jewelry from Cash4Gold.com. Then when the customer posted a blog entry about their experience, Cash4Gold allegedly sent them an offer for several thousand dollars in exchange for removal of the blog post (and no, they didn’t accept the cash…the Cockeyed website is currently the fourth result when searching for Cash4Gold.com on Google!)
Consumer Reports also suggests dealing with a local jeweler for an initial estimate and then calling around to other jewelers to get top dollar. The Consumer Reports article also includes a link to an online calculator to help you value your gold pieces.
If you’d rather have a little more fun while selling your jewelery, perhaps you would want to hold out for an invite to a gold selling party to sell your unwanted bling. Boing Boing references an article in the LA Times about the trend of gold selling parties, and even gives an example of one woman walking away with a check for $1,836.88!
