Wisconsin Cigarette Tax Goes Up $0.75 on Tuesday
If you’re a smoker, you might want to stock up on cigarettes today. That is because the State of Wisconsin cigarette tax increases by $0.75 to $2.52 a pack on Tuesday, September 1, 2009. This increase is in addition to the $1.00 per pack state tax increase last year, and a federal tax increase of $0.61 to $1.01 a pack earlier this year.
In addition to the increased tax on cigarettes, taxes on chewing tobacco and cigars are also increasing. Chewing tobacco will see an increase equal to 100% of the manufacturer’s established list price, up from a $1.31 per ounce. The tax on cigars will increase from 50% to 71% of the manufacturer’s established list price, or $0.50 a cigar, whichever is lower.
More information on the Wisconsin cigarette and tobacco tax increase can be found on the State of Wisconsin website.
