How to Save on Energy Costs – Use Your Ceiling Fan Properly
For those of you who are new to Milwaukee Consumer, each Wednesday we give our readers a tip on how they can save money on their WE Energies bill. With rates projected to increase for the next two years, our goal is to try to help consumers take action to offset the projected upcoming rate increases.
Last week we discussed how to give your air conditioner a quick tune up. Since hot and humid weather is just around the corner, we thought we’d give you another tip on how you can keep cool yet try to reduce your energy bill.
According to WE Energies, in hot weather you should set the ceiling fan direction to blow air down (counterclockwise direction). The air moving toward you creates a cooling effect. Therefore, you are able to raise the temperature on your thermostat and use less energy to run your air conditioner. (Remember in the winter to set the fan to blow toward the ceiling, which will push warm air away from the ceiling and distribute heat evenly in the room.)
The Energy Star website points out that fans cool people, not rooms. So, if you are not in the room then you should turn off your fan.
