flickr-g-a-sattlerAs we wrote last week, each Wednesday morning we will give you a new tip on how to save energy. With WE Energies rates projected to increase 4.9% in 2010 and 4.5% in 2011, our goal is to give you ideas that you can implement in order to offset the large energy bill increases that may be coming your way.

You’re probably already aware of the common energy saving suggestions such as using a programmable thermostat, insulating your attic, and using CFL lightbulbs.  However, our hope is that we’ll be able to bring you energy saving tips that you might not have heard of or implemented yet.

This week’s tip only requires an investment of about ten minutes of your time, but could yield solid results.

According to some sources, refrigerators can typically account for 15% of a home’s energy usage.  In order to keep your refrigerator running efficiently, you should vacuum the coils at least twice a year (more often if they are dirty or you have pets).  Not only will this easy maintenance step save you energy costs, but it will help prolong the life of your appliance.

For step by step directions on how to vacuum your refrigerator coils, read this article on eHow.

  2. This is a really good idea. I never considered cleaning the coils on my fridge. I just checked and they are so gross – totally full of dust! I’ll be cleaning them today. Hopefully I’ll save a little money if it runs more efficiently.
